Lacrimal Duct Irrigation

In cases of epiphora and tear overflow, once severe dry eye or an allergy has been ruled out, the most common cause is some form of blockage of the nasolacrimal duct. Lacrimal duct probing is a diagnostic test that determines whether the lacrimal duct is patent and, in most cases, the level of the blockage. The procedure is quick, painless, and involves passing normal saline through a special cannula under pressure from the lacrimal punctum until the patient feels it in the oral cavity. If the patient does not feel it, then we have confirmed the blockage of the tear duct.
