Break-up time (BUT) is a diagnostic test that provides an indication of how much and how quickly the tear film dries up—or evaporates. It is a diagnostic method that helps quantify the severity of dry eye. In some cases, such as Sjögren’s syndrome, it is combined with the lissamine green test.
